History
In 2003 Casanova Liquor was purchased by the Gaffer family and started a journey of education, events, releases of new products into the community and a growth of the already rich history of the property.
In 1870 the Yoerg family built the Hudson City brewery on this property along with a house that they lived in across the street. They ran a brewery at this location until 1891 when Louis died. The brewery then changed hands a few times until Tony and Chris Casanova purchased the brewery in 1896.
2 years after the brewery was purchased it burned down and the Casanova’s immediately rebuilt a new brewery that was 3 stories high, 32’ x 72’ and covered with galvanized steel paneling imitating stone. The whole building cost them $5000 to build.
by 1912 the Casanova Brewery had a capacity of 15,000 barrels and made beers named Casanova’s Old Settlers, Pilsner and Export. During prohibition they tried to make near beer but were unsuccessful and started creating soft drinks. They then changed their name to Casanova Beverage Company where they bought a local soda company and became a Coca-Cola Bottling company soon after.
When prohibition was repealed in 1933 Tony tried to sell the business but was unsuccessful. The large brewery was kept active with the business unitl 1947 when it was razed. The business became a Hamms Beer distributor and Tony’s sons took over the business until 1967 when Casanova Liquor was established. In 1971 the business was sold to Charles Olsen and then to the Horne family until 2003 when the Casanova’s purchased the property.
Upon purchase of the property the Gaffer’s added a new walk in cooler, renovated the building, opened the caves up for events and started a small restaurant in what used to be the loading docks for the old distributor. A few years latter they purchased the original Yeorg house and has now turned it into a short term rental property after renovation the whole house.
We will continue to honor the history of this property and hope to keep educating our amazing customers of all the great stories this place had created for people.
